About Michigan Allergy & Asthma Society

Our Mission

The mission of the Michigan Allergy & Asthma Society is to provide continuing postgraduate education to the allergists/immunologists of Michigan and to promote best clinical practices in a collegial environment. Any licensed physician in good standing whose major interest is allergy and immunology is eligible for election to membership in the Society. Active membership is for Diplomats of the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Pediatrics with sub-specialty training in allergy and immunology, or Diplomats of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, a conjoint Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics.

What is an Allergist?

An allergist is a highly trained medical or osteopathic doctor who has achieved the following:

  • Four year Baccalaureate degree
  • Four year Doctorate of Medicine or Osteopathy (M.D. or D.O.)
  • Three year hospital based fully accredited residency in either Internal Medicine or Pediatrics
  • Two to three year hospital based fulled accredited fellowship in Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology
Physicians who have achieved this level of training are the only physicians eligible to become certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology
